Princess Emilia Aurelius was only seven when she watched her mother die at the hands of her father—martyred for believing in the God of the Atlas Empire’s Insurgo rebels. At seventeen, exiled to a military outpost where no one knows her true identity, she’s vowed to leave her royalty behind and explore the truth of the Insurgo rebels her mother loved. When the Emperor of Atlas summons the princesses from each of the provinces to the imperial city to choose a wife for the crown prince, Emilia must leave her military life behind to join a royal court rife with cunning and intrigue. Navigating the waters of court politics and budding love are treacherous on their own, but Emilia fears for her life should anyone learn of her Insurgo sympathies. With an unlikely ally in the captain of the emperor's guard, Emilia must uncover the truth of the Insurgos, start a revolution, and learn to become the princess she’s vowed never to be, all while protecting her heart from a prince who could sign her death warrant.

Powerful!!

The Broken Crown blew my expectations out of the water, any type of preconceived notion I had about what this book was going to bring was tossed aside from page one.

Emilia is strong. She has sacrificed everything to keep her beliefs, and identity a secret. Until she's summoned to show herself for the Emperor of Atlas. Dreading what's going to happen when she shows herself again Emilia's defenses are up and her facade is strong. Keeping a neutral face is what will keep Emilia alive, and she knows it. Throughout the book there were a couple of times when it reminded me of The Selection in some ways, but none that made me question the storyline, characters or plots, because unlike The Selection there are so many religious twists it was wickedly cool to see how they played together.

I'm not huge into religious storylines, but here it was created into this fantasy YA super genre that intrigued me through the entire book.

As Emilia's loyalties are questioned, her ability to become resourceful shines. I love that about her. She can get her shit together super quick style! I've seen a lot of heroines that can't decide between the red shirt or the blue shirt in life or death situations, but Emilia could tell you what to do & how to do it in 5.2 seconds!

For the first book in a series I feel like this was a homerun, there is lots of room for growth in the story & the characters. I feel like Amyrn only scratched the surface with The Broken Crown, so we all better watch out for what happens next!
