WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T GET OLD. In fiery young Deirdre Callaghan’s home of Skellig City, no one has dreamt their own dream in over a thousand years. Dreams are produced by the Dream Makers and sold by the Ministry, the tyrannical rulers of the city. In Skellig City, years of life are awarded equally and the ruined are cast away beneath the city on their 35th birthday.
Unbeknownst to the Ministry, Deirdre’s handsome friend Flynn Brennan is afflicted with a terrible disease – a disease that accelerates the aging process. Knowing his fate if the Ministry should ever discover his illness, Flynn has lived his whole life hiding from their watchful eyes. When Flynn’s secret is finally discovered, Deirdre is determined to free him from the Ministry’s grasp. But to save him, she will have to reveal herself to a shadowy enemy…one that none of them even knew existed.
BRILLIANT!!
Everything single thing about this book sucked me in, and I let it! I was memorized by how each scene came together, how every character played a key role and no detail seemed left out. Especially when it came to Deirdre & Flynn's relationship. There are so many different quirks and little side notes that are happening throughout the book it seems like they almost don't make sense...then there's the moment of "ta-dah!", and they all click together.
Deirdre is badass, and I personally love her! I love her accent, her perception of everything in her life and she fights for those who are special to her. The secret that she hides in this book is large, it's life altering, and the fact that she's willing to expose it for Flynn says great things about the depth of their relationship. As whole these two make quiet the poetic pair....and I can't wait to see where their relationship goes during the rest of this series.
One thing I have to touch on is the Ministry.
Have you ever had that one character, or entity, in a novel that you just wanted to punch in the throat?? Yeah, that's how I feel about the Ministry and all it's players. As annoying as they were, I have to tip my hat to the author for creating such a provoking group of characters!
Overall this entire novel had my heart, from the beginning to the end. With it's landscapes, location and storyline, the whimsy that Ms. Quick was able to create within the pages of this book was amazing, and it only gives the reader a fantastic jumping off point for the rest of the series.
